The Purpose of TibetBridges [ Back to The FAQ ]

TibetBridges is not for free hosting: It is for learning how to stand on your own feet!

Thanks to Jeff Lebow, we have a web server, for hosting websites: http://tibetbridges.com/

Please know that the purpose of TibetBridges is NOT to "give free hosting".

*** TibetBridges is for people who want to own their website ***

It exists to have a place where Tibetans can learn how to build and manage websites, and i can teach there because i know the environment.

To do this:

You have other responsibilities as well:

You may have an outside person building the website: an Inji or Tibetan volunteer, or some company. Please be aware that the reponsibility for all of these things is NOT theirs: it is yours or your organisation's.

TibetBridges may not be the right hosting for you:
If you think you need "free hosting", you can find some through Google search, or through others who are providing for Tibetan community. But please don't use TibetBridges for that, as it takes away resources from those who are using it for learning.

You are an organisation? Grow up and get your own hosting!

In the old days, yes, Tibetans needed westerners to provide free hosting. This is no longer true.

Here is one resource for learning how to choose web hosting, including some free ones: http://tibetangeeks.com/technologies/web_development/web_hosting/web_hosting-compare.html

What's the big deal?

The web is the most powerful tool invented since the printing press. The Chinese government, and now other governments, are spending billions to control it! It is more powerful than bombs or guns.

It is your voice to the world.

The big deal, the wonderful deal, is to make your website as effective as possible.

James you talk too much!

I know :)
Think of this: almost every time there is a turnover in staff of many organisations here, i get the call: "What is our password?" "Website doesn't work, please fix it" etc. That makes me work too much! Those are YOUR responsibilities! Mine is only to keep the server running, and to help you learn how to do the other things. The time that i spend answering silly questions, is time that i could be doing my awesome talking about real stuff!

I am available all day, and sometimes most of the night, to answer useful questions, to teach how to do things, by phone, skype chat, email, in person — whatever works! I do this no matter where your site is hosted. Also there are many resources online, and many other persons, to help you improve your skills and your site.

James this all sounds too hard!

I know :)
Think of this: What is the freedom of Tibet worth? Is it worth the best?
Or is it ok to be "good enough"?
